In 2021 I plan to build out more style guides on my blog. I share a lot of fashion related content on Instagram, but my goal is to have something for you to reference when you are looking for inspo. We’re kicking off the style guides with How to Style Leggings, a much requested topic by all of you.
I’m sharing a mix of casual looks and more put together looks. There are additional style tips in the details and you can click any heading to save the outfit idea on Pinterest. One thing I struggle with when styling leggings is SHOES! I’ll leave recommendations with each look in case you’re in the same boat as I am.
1. Oversized Sweater
An oversized sweater is probably one of my favorite ways to style leggings. First, it is comfortable. Second, it looks put together without too much effort. In the fall/winter, you can find a variety of sweaters that cover your booty too. I gravitate towards high low sweaters, turtle neck sweaters, and cozy sweaters.
Shoes: You can pair an oversized sweater and legging look with sneakers for a more casual look and knee high boots for a dressier look.
2. Shacket
I recently jumped on the shacket trend and I’m very glad I did! These transition from day to night so easily and are even comfortable for lounging around the house. They are usually a bit longer and pair well with leggings. Throw on a crop top or graphic tee underneath and you are good to go.
Shoes: With leggings, I recommend a pair of high top sneakers to give the shacket an edgy, casual look. You could also style it with combat boots or booties too!
3. Athleisure
When I style leggings, I usually try to cover my booty, however, I think athletic wear still looks tasteful if the booty shows. Even if you are not working out, throw on a workout tank, sweatshirt, and leggings to run errands. Honestly, this is a go-to grocery look for me!
Shoes: Pair this look with your favorite pair of tennis shoes or sneakers.
4. Long Cardigan
Heading to grandma and grandpas this weekend? Throw on this simple leggings look and you’ll be good to go! I love pairing leggings with a longer cardigan because it dresses them up a bit while still feeling comfortable. It’s also not ~too~ fancy so it’s perfect for looking put together without being over the top.
Shoes: Pair this look with slip on sneakers or knee high boots.
5. Tunic Top
I mentioned before that I like to cover the booty when styling leggings. Pairing them with a long tunic top makes that so simple! This look is perfect for a day of shopping, girls night in, or brunch.
Shoes: I’d pair this slides or high top sneakers depending on the vibe you are going for.
6. Flannel
A classic leggings look includes a flannel! Most flannels cover your booty and while they are similar to shackets, a traditional flannel is more lightweight. I love throwing a graphic tee underneath making this outfit perfect for just about anything you plan to do during the day.
Shoes: Slip on sneakers are usually my go-to with a flannel + leggings outfit.
7. Oversized Sweatshirt
I guarantee many of you have a baggy sweatshirt in your closet right now. Don’t underestimate how cute it can be paired with leggings. Add a denim jacket over the sweatshirt, a baseball cap, or just simply roll up the sleeves to give the look more style. Many of my sweatshirts are from college but there are plenty online these days!
Shoes: I’d pair this look with tennis shoes, hight top sneakers, snow boots, or furry mules.
8. Long Jacket
Last, but not least, do not forget about your accessory pieces when styling leggings. I’d pair leggings with a denim jacket or longer fashion coat to dress up the outfit in seconds. There are plenty of outings where I do not even take a lightweight jacket off, so it is truly a part of my outfit.
Shoes: Pair the jacket + leggings look with mules or booties!
I hope you enjoyed this legging style guide! Vote for the next style guide on Instagram later this week and remember, when it comes to fashion wear something that makes you feel comfortably you.
XOXO,
MegMat
